SNYDER, TX – Snyder ISD is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Tommy Duncan as the new principal of Snyder Junior High School. With over 20 years of leadership experience spanning education and the private sector, Dr. Duncan brings a clear passion for working with middle school students and building campus cultures rooted in trust, consistency, and student success.
A native of Seymour, Texas, Dr. Duncan earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Texas Tech University. Before entering the field of education, he spent several years as an on-air radio personality. In 2012, he transitioned into education, beginning as a biology teacher at Estacado High School. He later taught chemistry, physics, and forensic science at Lubbock High School.
Motivated to expand his impact beyond the classroom, Dr. Duncan completed a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Angelo State University and later earned a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Abilene Christian University. He served as an assistant principal in Midland and at Hutchinson Middle School in Lubbock before being named a principal in Lubbock ISD.
“The interview committee, which included district leadership and four Snyder Junior High department chairs/teachers, quickly recognized that Dr. Duncan was the right fit,” said Dr. Jessica Gore, Assistant Superintendent. “He brings the right energy, an eagerness to collaborate, consistency, and a clear priority and deep understanding of strong academics. He knows what it takes to move the needle forward for kids.”
Dr. Duncan is no stranger to stepping into challenging roles and leading with purpose. He knows how to motivate people—students and staff alike—by building trust, setting clear goals, and celebrating progress. With a keen ability to analyze academic data and identify areas for improvement, he empowers his team to implement targeted plans that lead to real results. Just as important, Dr. Duncan prioritizes creating a school culture that is safe, supportive, and brings fun back to learning.
During his time as a middle school principal, he led campus-wide initiatives that boosted academic performance, strengthened staff collaboration, and built a positive school culture where every student felt valued and had a place to belong. He believes that when students are actively engaged, they thrive—and his leadership consistently reflects that commitment.
Superintendent Bob Rauch emphasized the significance of this leadership appointment, noting, “This is a big win for Snyder ISD. Dr. Duncan has a reputation for setting clear and consistent expectations, building trust, and creating wins in tough environments.” Rauch continued, “We have a strong core group at Snyder Junior High who are eager to move forward and will benefit from the experience Dr. Duncan brings to Snyder.”
“What drew me to Snyder is the chance to build something that makes a lasting difference for kids and their families,” said Dr. Duncan. “I know what this work takes, and I believe Snyder Junior High is ready for that next step. I'm excited to get started and get to know the team, the students, and our families.”
Outside of education, Dr. Duncan is known for his sense of humor and wide-ranging interests, including Star Wars, Judge Judy, and Allsup’s burritos. If you're looking to strike up a conversation, those topics are a great place to start. While his official start date is in July, you will likely spot him on campus and in the community during June as he gets a jump start on the work ahead.
