powerlifting

Here is Friday’s update from Coach Gonzales after Thursday’s powerlifting meet:

So proud of this group last night! I can promise you this, everyone in the facility knew where the Snyder Tigers and Lady Tigers were! Our energy and enthusiasm was running this meet! Having said that, enthusiasm is the mother of EFFORT, and our Tigers and Lady Tigers had our best performance of the year as a TEAM!

Highlights

Caprock League Meet Team Champion were our Snyder Lady Tigers!!!

148lb: Sophomore Adda Gonzales won first place in her weight class and had a huge PR in her overall total and in the meat rack squatting 260lbs. Adda was also awarded the “Best Lifter Award” in the smaller weight division, 97lb-165lb classes.

FRESHMAN Emily Sanchez placed 2nd in the 148lb class! She placed 2nd in the Best Lifter category! This young FRESHMAN on her last lift of the day picked up 275lbs off of the ground!!!! She increased her overall total to 635lbs. This will put her ranked 10th in the region! The top 12 qualify for the regional meet!

165lb: Senior Bri Melendez placed first in her weight class!!! She had a huge PR in the meat rack by squatting 260lbs. This is 55lbs of improvement!! She also had a huge PR in the deadlift last night of 250lbs, increase by 25lbs. Her overall total has bumped her ranking to 11th in the region which will give her a chance the qualify for the regional meet! We will know for sure on Monday!

198lb: Tristan Velasquez had adversity last night but she did something that not a lot of FRESHMAN cant handle. She squatted 240lbs in squat which is improvement by 45lbs! Freaking awesome! She ended up bombing out of the meet by not getting a bench. This is her head coaches fault. She deserves better. She was crushed that she couldn’t FINISH the meet. So you know what she did, she rallied. Wiped her tears and was her TEAMS biggest fan for the rest of the night and cheered our TEAM on for the rest of the night! That takes guts! She didn’t pout, she responded. Glad she is on our TEAM!

242lb: FRESHMAN Zariah Potts placed 1st in her weight class! She had huge squat PR by 60lbs and a huge 50lb PR in the bench press last night. She was so close to picking up 250lbs off of the ground! Her first 1st place FINISH of the year!

Tigers placed 4th overall as a TEAM.

123lb: Sophomore Tomas Ramos and Junior Nemo Vasquez made their powerlifting debut of the season. They have been pushing hard in the weight room, but been pushing hard in the classroom also, which gave them the opportunity to compete last night. Very proud of them both. Tomas won first place in this division and Nemo placed 2nd. Tomas weighs less than 123lbs, he put 425lbs on his back and took it for a ride! Nemo also weighs less than 123lbs and put 410lbs on his back and took it for a ride. These 2 guys were NOT SCARED last night and had no parachute!

148lb: Sophomore Gavin Hernandez placed 2nd overall in his weight class. He PR’d in every lift last night. Guess what he did this morning? He was in the weight room the day after the powerlifting meet working out at 9am and will compete his tail off in a district soccer game tonight. His work ethic is impeccable! He is getting better competing in 3 varsity sports right now, WHY, he works!

165lb: Sophomore Boden Griffith placed 5th in his weight class. Had a HUGE PR in the bench press. Pressed 270lbs off of his chest! SAVAGE! He also got his butt out of the rack at 9am this morning to workout, went to track practice at 11am, and will compete his tail off tonight in a district soccer game! No excuses, just WORK!

198lb: Junior AJ Smith placed 2nd overall in his weight class. Our man AJ got off of the bus yesterday with a purpose! Had a 30lb PR in squat and and a 50lb PR in the deadlift. This puts him 50lbs away from breaking the top 12 to qualify for the regional meet. He has one more week to battle and I guarantee he will not go down without fighting!

242lb: Sophomore Gensyn Fuentes placed 3rd in his weight class yesterday and had a huge breakthrough on the bench press. He had plateaued the past few weeks and it has been frustrating to him. He has just kept working. What’s work get you? 45lb PR in the bench press!! Came in bench pressing 215lb! Walked away last night crushing 260lbs! WORK!!!!

275lbs: Sophomore Ruben Vasquez placed 2nd overall in his weight class. Losing out to first by 30lbs. He deserves better! He had himself a DAY though! Came in squatting 475lbs and walked away squatting 530lbs! Came in bench pressing 315lbs, he ripped his shirt, walked away benching 335lbs! Walked in deadlifting 415lbs, and walked away deadlifting 455lbs! A DAY!!!!

Proud of our Tigers and Lady Tigers! I know it’s a lot to read but guess what, I DON’T CARE! These student-athletes are doing special things right now! Proud of them!
