SNYDER, TX — Snyder Independent School District is proud to announce that Mr. Wade McMahand has been named both the District and Regional Bus Driver of the Year. This prestigious honor is awarded through the PCAT Bus Driver of the Year program, which recognizes exceptional drivers based on leadership, attitude, perseverance, student and parent relationships, and technical skill.
Mr. McMahand was one of only four bus drivers selected from ESC Regions 14-19, a region that spans the majority of West Texas. His dedication to the students and staff of Snyder ISD, as well as his skill and character, made him a standout candidate for the award.
Chris Jalomo, Director of Operations for Snyder ISD, shared, “He is the first one here and the last one to leave. Wade sets the standard for bus drivers not only in our district but across the entire region. He is easy to work with, always has a smile on his face, and makes everyone else’s job easier.” Jalomo added, “He brings a unique and valuable skill set to the department, serving as both a mechanic and a bus driver.”
In addition to his technical knowledge and reliability, McMahand is known for his calm presence, quick thinking, and selflessness. On cold mornings, he arrives early to start all of the route buses so they’re warm and ready to go when other drivers arrive—just one of the many quiet ways he supports his team.
Last year, when a water main break disrupted school operations and school had to be released early, Wade stepped up without hesitation—taking on five separate bus routes to ensure all students made it home safely. His colleagues consistently describe him as someone who goes above and beyond, helping new drivers, ensuring students are safe and well-behaved, and creating a positive atmosphere wherever he goes.
“Wade has never hesitated when I’ve told him about problems on the bus,” shared fellow driver Melinda Owens. “He has offered advice and always done that with a smile and a positive attitude.”
Another driver, Shirley Daves, said, “He’s an all-around great guy, friend, and coworker. He goes above and beyond when asked to do anything. He pretty much knows all about the buses, and if he doesn’t, he figures it out on his own.”
Whether he’s rolling out from under a bus to jump behind the wheel, mentoring new drivers, or lending a hand in the early hours of the morning, Wade McMahand embodies the kind of dedication and integrity that transforms school transportation into something far more than just a daily route—it becomes a service of care, safety, and reliability.
Snyder ISD is proud to have Mr. McMahand on our team and grateful for the impact he continues to make on our students, staff, and community.
